THE SOCKS

I knew I had a picture somewhere of the socks...these were his taxi ones.

I wore mismatched socks to the funeral. Nothing as garish as Michael's taxicab socks, of course. I thought it would be a fitting tribute.

I frequently think of Michael when I can't find two socks in my draw that match! It frustrates me; it would have delighted him!

And of course it helps us remember what a unique individual and a great friend that he was.

I ran across another "Reminder of Michael" a few minutes ago in a collection of forgotten My Docs doc's on my PC. It was a recommendation he asked me to write for him for grad school.

I couldn't throw it out. So instead I decided to share it.

Some recommendations you are asked to write are creative efforts to put "lipstick on a pig." Not this one. I stand by every word of my story!

It only reminds me what an amazing person he was, and how we are a little poorer now that he is no longer with us.

I am honored to offer a recommendation for Michael Simanoff for your Masters in Information and Library Science program. I have worked with Mike for two years at Phase2Media and have been consistently impressed by his enthusiasm and broad range of knowledge of technology, new media and media research. His extensive liberal arts background that includes a love of music and Russian literature round out his qualifications as a stellar candidate for your post-graduate program.

Mike’s ability to articulate complex ideas and his strong work ethic are tremendous assets to the use of the Internet as a research and communications tool. He is an excellent writer and public speaker, and has contributed frequently to Phase2Media’s monthly Web publication on research relating to consumer Internet behavior (www.analyzetheweb.com). Mike is comfortable writing analysis of research data, and is widely acknowledged among his peers as both a strong presenter and an accomplished teacher of research and technology related topics. He has proven himself to be open to new ideas and encourages a diversity of thought when trying to solve complex problems.

Mike’s hard work intelligence and insights, plus his enthusiasm to master new skills have made him a valuable contributor to the success of Phase2Media. We will miss his leadership and support, but look forward to hearing about his successes in your program.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about Mike’s qualifications for your program.

Sincerely,

Dave Zornow
